Cognitive Educational Assessment

A cognitive-educational assessment involves four hours of 1:1 testing using the Woodcock Johnson 1V battery.

This battery has three components ––

  • The Woodcock Johnson 1V Tests of Cognitive Abilities: an assessment to identify intellectual strengths and weaknesses

  • The Woodcock Johnson 1V Tests of Oral Language: an assessment of oral expression, phonological awareness etc

  • The Woodcock Johnson 1V Tests of Achievement: an assessment of literacy and numeracy skills.

Although this may sound daunting, the tasks are varied and relatively brief; the longest tasking taking approximately eight minutes.

The goal of the assessment is to provide an indication of the student’s cognitive strengths, and weaknesses, current achievement levels (when compared with his/her age peers), to recommend intervention strategies and, where appropriate, recommendations for special assessment (SAC) conditions.

Two 2-hour testing sessions are required. The Tests of Cognitive Abilities are administered during the first session, and the Tests of Oral Language and Tests of Achievement are administered during the second session.

Initial feedback is provided during the final ten minutes of the second session. As information gathering, discussions, reviewing previous assessments, analysis of the results, report-writing and word-processing, require a further four to six hours, reports are forwarded approximately 15 business days after the final assessment appointment.
